GuideStar, the organization that gathers and publicizes information about nonprofits, recently became aware of an error that affects Form 990 postings for the 2008 tax year. Forms filed electronically between 1/1/2009 and 12/3/2010 for filing year 2008 may have IRS processing errors that appear as inaccurate data on the scanned images on GuideStar. The information filed with the IRS is correct, but errors in scanning may include:
– Incorrect mission description and program achievements
– Transposed values for Special Event gross income
– Blank values for salaries and wages, management and general expenses
– Transposed values for endowment funds in possession of related organizations
Although the list of errors sounds dire, GuideStar is working with the IRS to obtain accurate records and post the correct Form 990 when the true form is available. If you have questions that relate to your organization, you can contact nposervices@guidestar.org.
