Nonprofit organizations are required to comply with various state and federal regulations and related filings. Just because an organization is classified as a “tax-exempt” organization by the IRS does not mean that they are “exempt” from paying various “taxes” (payroll, excise, etc.). Understanding regulatory compliance and navigating the related complex rules and filing requirements can be daunting and overwhelming. Most of our new nonprofit clients “don’t know what they don’t know”. It’s all about educating our clients and friends on the rules that help them understand the filing requirements for tax-exempt organization.
The IRS no longer accepts the defense “we just didn’t understand or know” the regulatory rules. Ignorance doesn’t go very far with the IRS these days.
